Every year, Nashville school cafeterias send an estimated 10 million pounds of food to the landfill. Adopt-A-Cafeteria, an initiative by Urban Green Lab, is working to change that by connecting schools with community partners who can help reduce food waste, support food recovery, and build lasting sustainability habits.
But how does the program work, and how can you get involved?
What Is Adopt-A-Cafeteria?
Adopt-A-Cafeteria connects school cafeterias with businesses, organizations, and community sponsors willing to invest in food-waste reduction and sustainability education. Sponsors fund a full year of support for a participating cafeteria, while Urban Green Lab coordinates the partnership and tracks its impact.
The goal is to make food-waste solutions more accessible to schools while giving students opportunities to put sustainability into practice.
How Does It Work?
- Schools enroll. School cafeterias interested in reducing food waste can apply to participate. Schools can join whether they already compost or are starting from scratch.
- Sponsors step up. Businesses, organizations, and community partners select a sponsorship level and share their preferences for the type of cafeteria or community impact they want to support.
- Urban Green Lab makes the match. Urban Green Lab connects sponsors with participating cafeterias based on factors such as location, interests, readiness, and volunteer opportunities.
- Schools receive support. Through the partnership, cafeterias gain access to composting services, equipment and signage, staff guidance, education, and opportunities for community involvement.
- Impact is tracked. Urban Green Lab monitors program outcomes and provides sponsors with an annual impact report documenting results such as food waste diverted, meals shared, and volunteer participation.
Each partnership generally lasts one year, giving schools time to implement practices and build habits that can continue beyond the program.
Why Does It Matter?
Food waste affects more than the environment. When food goes uneaten, the resources used to grow, transport, prepare, and serve it are wasted, too. Diverting appropriate food scraps from landfills and supporting food recovery can help communities make better use of those resources.
Adopt-A-Cafeteria also turns the cafeteria into a learning environment. Students can participate in sustainability efforts, understand the consequences of waste, and develop habits that extend into their homes and communities.
The program's 2024–2025 pilot demonstrated what this approach can accomplish. Across 11 school cafeterias, the initiative diverted 102,540 pounds of food from landfills and engaged 4,837 students.
How Can You Support Adopt-A-Cafeteria?
There are several ways to help expand the program across Nashville.
- Sponsor a cafeteria. Businesses and organizations can fund a year of programming for a school and receive an annual impact report.
- Enroll a school. School representatives can submit an application to join the program. Participating cafeterias do not have to secure their own sponsorship.
- Get involved as a community partner. Organizations and volunteers can explore opportunities to support implementation and student engagement.
- Make a donation. Individual contributions help support composting and food-waste reduction efforts in school cafeterias.
- Spread the word. Share the program with local businesses, school communities, and organizations that may be interested in supporting a cafeteria.
Help Nashville Waste Less
Reducing school food waste takes more than a compost bin. It takes the resources, education, and community partnerships that help sustainable practices become part of everyday life.
Adopt-A-Cafeteria brings those pieces together, connecting schools that need support with community partners ready to make a difference.
