Turning Down the Heat on Urban Heat Islands

August 10, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm CDT

Free

Have you ever noticed on a hot day that it is cooler when standing by green space? Or maybe you’ve noticed that there seems to be city weather and non-city weather? If yes, you would be feeling the effects of the urban heat island effect, a serious problem for marginalized and vulnerable populations in urban centers. According to the National Weather Service, extreme heat is the deadliest weather event in the United States every year and the way our cities are built tends to increase those risks. Join us as we chat with Middle Tennessee State University’s Assistant Professor, Dr. Alisa Hass, and Research Assistant, Sophia Roberts about the health implications of Nashville’s heat island effect, how it relates to environmental justice, and ways we as community members can help protect our most vulnerable neighbors.

This event is free and open to the public. Registration required to view live.
