Earth Month is an inspiring time to examine our practices, make plans, and put new, more sustainable habits into action. The newness and freshness of spring provides a certain energy for tackling these changes in our everyday lives.
At Urban Green Lab, we know sustainable change is based on a foundation of good planning. And many of us love to make bold plans, but we can't stop there.
I’ve sat in a lot of planning meetings over my career. Here’s what happens: People come together. They study the issue. They write a plan. Then it sits on a shelf, while the problem continues.
It doesn’t have to be that way. At Urban Green Lab, we do something simple: We pick up the plan. We dust it off. And we turn it into everyday actions you can take to live a more sustainable life – for people and our planet.
That’s what Earth Month is about. Action. Nashville has strong plans. They show us how to reduce waste, prepare for extreme weather, improve our health, and build a better city. We have the blueprints. We have the roadmaps. We have the solutions, the expertise, and the willpower. Now we just need to press “go.” Our job is to help make that happen.
As part of our 2030 strategy, Living Sustainably Together, we help you understand what these plans mean. And we help you act on them. It’s about making sure you, your family, and our planet are safe and thriving, and that you know how to make a meaningful difference in your daily life.
Here are a few of the plans shaping Nashville’s future. And how we’re helping bring them to life.
Nashville Climate Action Plan (CAP)
The Nashville Climate Action Plan aims to reduce emissions and build a healthier, more energy-efficient city. It starts with how we power our homes, how we get around, and how we use energy each day. At Urban Green Lab, we make this practical. Working with teachers, students, households, and workplaces, we help people understand energy use and climate impacts. Then we show how small changes, like saving energy at home or rethinking how we commute, can lower costs, improve air quality, and support a healthier Nashville.
Zero Waste Master Plan (ZWMP)
Nashville has a waste problem. The Zero Waste Master Plan offers a path forward. The goal is to divert 90% of waste from landfills by 2050 and cut food waste in half by 2030. Right now, we throw away too much. Much of it is still useful, especially food. We work in schools and communities across the city to help people see waste differently. We support share tables. We promote composting. We teach simple ways to waste less. These actions save money, build better habits, and move us toward a more efficient system.
Climate Adaptation & Resilience Plan (CARP)
Extreme weather is here. The Climate Adaptation and Resilience Plan helps Nashvillians prepare. It focuses on floods, heat, and storms. The risks are growing. And they affect some neighborhoods more than others. We help make preparedness real by bringing neighbors, organizations, and local leaders together. We share lessons and build awareness. We help people identify simple steps they can take. Building connections is at the heart of this work. Because resilience is not just about infrastructure. It is about people and community.
NashvilleNext & Imagine Nashville
Cities change. Plans like NashvilleNext and Imagine Nashville help guide that change. They reflect what people want Nashville to be. A city that is connected. Inclusive. Built for long-term well-being. Growth brings choices – how we build, how we move, how we live together. We help make those choices clearer. We work with businesses, developers, and communities, and promote sustainable practices. We support walkable, connected neighborhoods. And we show how the built environment shapes our health, our environment, and our quality of life.
What This Means for You
Plans are important, but they are only the beginning. What matters is what we do next. Earth Month is a chance to act. It’s about the choices we make each day – how we use energy, how we manage waste, how we prepare for change, and how we care for our neighbors. These steps may seem small, but together, they add up.
Living Sustainably Together
Sustainable living is not one thing: It is a way of life. It shapes how we eat, move, build, learn, and care for one another. Our role is to make it simple, clear, and possible. This Earth Month, we invite you in, because when you pick up the plan in your own mind, your own life, and put it into practice, change becomes real, and together, we build a better future.
