River Friendly Farms
August 9, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:15 pm CDT
FreeFarming is key to the economy, well-being, and identity of Tennessee, and while it may surprise you to find farms in a city, we have farms providing this essential service here in the Nashville community. Like many of the aspects of a city, there are more sustainable ways to practice farming. One way is to consider how a farm contributes to the health of creeks, streams, lakes, and rivers.
With over 50% of Tennessee waterways too over-polluted to safely fish, swim, or sustain aquatic life, it is vital that our farms champion land management practices that not only prevent negative impacts to our waterways but also provide a benefit to these aquatic ecosystems and the communities that surround them. The River Friendly Farms certification program through Cumberland River Compact is one way to recognize and support farmers that are good stewards of both land and water resources.
Join us for an informative conversation with two local River Friendly farmers, Reggie Marshall of Reggie’s Veggies and Alex Bice of Cooper Creek Farm, and the Working Lands Program Manager at Cumberland River Compact, Caroline Hutchins. We will discuss the important relationship between farms and watersheds, what farmers are doing in and around Nashville to maximize best practices for our waterways, and what it means to be a River Friendly Farm in Nashville.
This event is free and open to the public. Registration is required to view live. Click here to register.
