SUMMARY:Cheers to Sustainable Beverages
DESCRIPTION:When we think about how to live sustainably\, we may not consider what we are drinking at an event or a party with loved ones. But\, like food\, the ingredients\, processes\, and systems used to craft our beverages can be made more sustainable with a little care and thought. \nJoin us for a discussion with Mark Valencia\, Environmental Scientist with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation and manager of the Tennessee Sustainable Spirits program\, and Rhonda Cammon\, founder & CEO of Perfectly Cordial and recent alum of Vanderbilt’s Climate Innovation Accelerator program. We will talk about best practices for reducing environmental impacts in the beverage and spirit industry and how community-based support programs can help businesses become even more sustainable through creative problem-solving. \nSpirits\, cocktails\, and mocktails are often shared in community\, so let’s raise a glass to sustainability together and learn what it takes to make sustainable choices for our beverages enjoyed in Nashville. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Registration is required to view live. Click here to register. \n_____________________________________________ \nHosted by Zero Waste Nashville and Urban Green Lab\, “Sustainable in the City” features interviews\, webinars\, and panel discussions with Nashville’s top experts in all areas of waste and sustainability.

SUMMARY:River Friendly Farms
DESCRIPTION:Farming is key to the economy\, well-being\, and identity of Tennessee\, and while it may surprise you to find farms in a city\, we have farms providing this essential service here in the Nashville community. Like many of the aspects of a city\, there are more sustainable ways to practice farming. One way is to consider how a farm contributes to the health of creeks\, streams\, lakes\, and rivers. \nWith over 50% of Tennessee waterways too over-polluted to safely fish\, swim\, or sustain aquatic life\, it is vital that our farms champion land management practices that not only prevent negative impacts to our waterways but also provide a benefit to these aquatic ecosystems and the communities that surround them. The River Friendly Farms certification program through Cumberland River Compact is one way to recognize and support farmers that are good stewards of both land and water resources. \nJoin us for an informative conversation with two local River Friendly farmers\, Reggie Marshall of Reggie’s Veggies and Alex Bice of Cooper Creek Farm\, and the Working Lands Program Manager at Cumberland River Compact\, Caroline Hutchins. We will discuss the important relationship between farms and watersheds\, what farmers are doing in and around Nashville to maximize best practices for our waterways\, and what it means to be a River Friendly Farm in Nashville. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Registration is required to view live. Click here to register. \n_____________________________________________ \nHosted by Zero Waste Nashville and Urban Green Lab\, Sustainable in the City features interviews\, webinars\, and panel discussions with Nashville’s top experts in all areas of waste and sustainability.

SUMMARY:Nashville's Food Scraps Pickup Pilot
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever cleaned out your fridge and dumped your leftover or expired food into the trash? Many of us have\, and in doing so\, about one-third of what Nashville residents throw away is food and yard waste. When this material is thrown away\, it takes up space in local landfills and creates a potent greenhouse gas called methane. One way to keep food waste out of the trash is by composting it\, returning rich nutrients back into the soil to nourish new plants. While many Nashville residents may be aware of the benefits of composting\, not every home has the space or means to conveniently compost. Nashville’s new Food Scraps Pickup Pilot program could be a solution to a few of these problems. \nJoin us to get the dirt on composting from Jenn Harrman\, Zero Waste Program Manager at Metro Nashville Waste Services. We will be discussing the Food Scraps Pickup Pilot and how this program fits into Nashville’s overall waste reduction goals.

SUMMARY:Sustainable in the City Webinar - Nashville's Climate Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Derecho\, tornado\, flood\, heat wave\, and extreme cold. What do these things have in common? They are events that Nashville has experienced in the past four years that have had devastating impacts on the city. These types of weather events are occurring with greater severity and frequency due to a changing climate. Nashville has a plan in place to reduce carbon emissions\, but what is it doing to adapt to the extreme weather events that we are experiencing today? A changing climate can threaten access to basic resources\, disrupt people’s lives\, and cause damage to Nashville’s infrastructure. To protect our community\, Metro Nashville has created a Climate Adaptation and Resilience Plan\, while also working with intradepartmental Metro staff to develop an internal toolkit and framework\, which together aim to equitably improve Nashville’s ability to withstand and recover from climate-driven hazards. \nJoin us for an informative discussion with Kristin Stroup\, Executive Fellow\, Building Resilience in City Operations\, and Kendra Abkowitz\, Chief Sustainability and Resilience Officer for the Office of Mayor Freddie O’Connell. We will discuss the City’s draft plan and how it helps to ensure that Nashville’s infrastructure\, systems\, economy\, and community can anticipate\, cope with\, and bounce back from expected and unexpected events.

SUMMARY:Sustainable in the City Webinar - Youth-Led Community Design
DESCRIPTION:When we take action to protect the environment\, we are supporting the needs of Nashville’s future generations. With an eye towards the future\, it is also important that present-day city planning is a multi-generational effort that includes youth voices now. The youth at Civic Design Center are advocating for a Nashville that meets the needs of their generation. \nJoin us for a conversation with Melody Gibson\, Education Director and Cydney Thompson\, Youth Programs Intern at Civic Design Center\, to learn more about the youth efforts in creating a sustainable and safer Nashville. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Registration is required to view live.
