SUMMARY:Turning Down the Heat on Urban Heat Islands
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever noticed on a hot day that it is cooler when standing by green space? Or maybe you’ve noticed that there seems to be city weather and non-city weather? If yes\, you would be feeling the effects of the urban heat island effect\, a serious problem for marginalized and vulnerable populations in urban centers. According to the National Weather Service\, extreme heat is the deadliest weather event in the United States every year and the way our cities are built tends to increase those risks. Join us as we chat with Middle Tennessee State University’s Assistant Professor\, Dr. Alisa Hass\, and Research Assistant\, Sophia Roberts about the health implications of Nashville’s heat island effect\, how it relates to environmental justice\, and ways we as community members can help protect our most vulnerable neighbors. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Registration required to view live. \n_____________________________________________ \nHosted by Zero Waste Nashville and Urban Green Lab\, “Sustainable in the City” features interviews\, webinars\, and panel discussions with Nashville’s top experts in all areas of waste and sustainability. \nBethany EdwardsBethany serves as the Director of Best Practices at Urban Green Lab. SUMMARY:How Sustainability Influences our Health
DESCRIPTION:Do all Nashvillians have the same health outcomes when we each try our best to be healthy? We can do all of the recommended moving\, eating\, and going to the doctor\, but can we really be attuned to our full health if the sustainability of the communities where we live\, work\, and play is not considered? Sustainability leads us down a path to cleaner air\, soil\, and water all of which can impact the individual and collective health of our community. Join us for a conversation with John Vick\, the Interim Director\, Office of Primary Prevention at the Tennessee Department of Health as we discuss the health implications of sustainable action in Nashville and how we can ensure all of our neighbors have access to livable and equitable communities. SUMMARY:Riding into a Sustainable Future
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever sat in your car in stand-still traffic or searched tirelessly for a parking sHave you ever sat in your car in stand-still traffic or searched tirelessly for a parking spot and thought\, there must be another way? If NDOT and WeGo have anything to say about it\, there is. Imagine yourself zipping along Nashville’s streets\, hopping off near your destination\, and not having to worry about parking. Many of us are unfamiliar with this way of moving around the city but public transportation can be safer\, greener\, and cheaper overall when compared to relying on cars alone. \nOn average\, Nashvillians spend 33 hours a year in traffic so let’s break down some barriers around how we get more people out of their cars and into alternative transit. Join us for a discussion with Diana Alarcon\, Director of NDOT\, and Stephen G. Bland\, Chief Executive Officer of WeGo Public Transit / RTA of Middle Tennessee as we discover how our transit system is evolving and how we all can ride with sustainability in mind. SUMMARY:Getting the Buzz on Pollinators
DESCRIPTION:Spring in Nashville means spending more time outside and with that comes the buzzing and beautiful colors of pollinators like butterflies\, hummingbirds\, and bees. Our natural ecosystems and food production depend on all types of pollinators to support biodiversity and the reproduction of flowering plants\, but did you know that bees play an especially important role? A third of the world’s food production depends on bees! And while we may think of honeybees as the “traditional” bee–black\, yellow\, and fuzzy–there are thousands of unique and native bee species that are even more efficient pollinators. Join us for a buzzing discussion with Carol Taylor\, President of Master Gardeners of Davidson County\, and Ian Dawe\, Secretary of Nashville Area Beekeepers Association and co-founder of We are The Honey Collective\, as we learn about the importance of bees and how we can care for a wide community of pollinators. We’ll also get a glimpse inside what it takes to operate small-scale honeybee farms right here in Nashville. This episode is sure to be the bee’s knees. SUMMARY:Environmental Justice in Nashville
DESCRIPTION:In Nashville and around the country\, environmental degradation\, pollution\, and disasters hit communities of color and low-income communities first\, worst\, and longest. Environmental justice (EJ) is a concept that can empower all Nashvillians toward having a city that works for all of our needs and empowers Nashville’s most marginalized communities. Environmental justice shows us that if we care for our most affected community members\, we all can enjoy the benefits of shared dignity in our environment. Join us for an important discussion with Dr. David Padgett\, Associate Professor of Geography and Director of Geographic and Information Sciences Laboratory at Tennessee State University on environmental justice in Nashville. We will cover both the history and the current work being done with the Nashville Environmental Justice Initiative and beyond to ensure all community members have access to clean\, healthy\, safe spaces to live\, work\, and play. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Registration is required to view live. SUMMARY:Borrow Instead of Buy
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to try a new craft or hobby but found yourself discouraged after realizing you didn’t have the needed tools? Or have you bought the tools for that new hobby only to realize that you don’t actually enjoy knitting\, birdwatching\, or playing the bongos? Nashville Public Library’s newest program offers an alternative: borrow instead of buy. Launched in early 2023\, the Library of Things allows NPL library cardholders to borrow a range of useful household items including activities and games\, health and fitness equipment\, tools and electronics\, and much more to provide further enrichment to the Nashville community. Join us for a discussion with Nashville Public Library’s Donelson Branch staff—Ryan Darrow\, Library Branch Manager\, and Bailey Battilla\, Adult Librarian—to learn about the importance of sharing common household items to reduce the need to buy new. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Registration is required to view live. SUMMARY:Cheers to Sustainable Beverages
DESCRIPTION:When we think about how to live sustainably\, we may not consider what we are drinking at an event or a party with loved ones. But\, like food\, the ingredients\, processes\, and systems used to craft our beverages can be made more sustainable with a little care and thought. \nJoin us for a discussion with Mark Valencia\, Environmental Scientist with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation and manager of the Tennessee Sustainable Spirits program\, and Rhonda Cammon\, founder & CEO of Perfectly Cordial and recent alum of Vanderbilt’s Climate Innovation Accelerator program. We will talk about best practices for reducing environmental impacts in the beverage and spirit industry and how community-based support programs can help businesses become even more sustainable through creative problem-solving. \nSpirits\, cocktails\, and mocktails are often shared in community\, so let’s raise a glass to sustainability together and learn what it takes to make sustainable choices for our beverages enjoyed in Nashville. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Registration is required to view live. SUMMARY:River Friendly Farms
DESCRIPTION:Farming is key to the economy\, well-being\, and identity of Tennessee\, and while it may surprise you to find farms in a city\, we have farms providing this essential service here in the Nashville community. Like many of the aspects of a city\, there are more sustainable ways to practice farming. One way is to consider how a farm contributes to the health of creeks\, streams\, lakes\, and rivers. \nWith over 50% of Tennessee waterways too over-polluted to safely fish\, swim\, or sustain aquatic life\, it is vital that our farms champion land management practices that not only prevent negative impacts to our waterways but also provide a benefit to these aquatic ecosystems and the communities that surround them. The River Friendly Farms certification program through Cumberland River Compact is one way to recognize and support farmers that are good stewards of both land and water resources. \nJoin us for an informative conversation with two local River Friendly farmers\, Reggie Marshall of Reggie’s Veggies and Alex Bice of Cooper Creek Farm\, and the Working Lands Program Manager at Cumberland River Compact\, Caroline Hutchins. We will discuss the important relationship between farms and watersheds\, what farmers are doing in and around Nashville to maximize best practices for our waterways\, and what it means to be a River Friendly Farm in Nashville. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Registration is required to view live. Click here to register. \n_____________________________________________ \nHosted by Zero Waste Nashville and Urban Green Lab\, Sustainable in the City features interviews\, webinars\, and panel discussions with Nashville’s top experts in all areas of waste and sustainability. \nBethany EdwardsBethany serves as the Director of Best Practices at Urban Green Lab. SUMMARY:Nashville's Food Scraps Pickup Pilot
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever cleaned out your fridge and dumped your leftover or expired food into the trash? Many of us have\, and in doing so\, about one-third of what Nashville residents throw away is food and yard waste. When this material is thrown away\, it takes up space in local landfills and creates a potent greenhouse gas called methane. One way to keep food waste out of the trash is by composting it\, returning rich nutrients back into the soil to nourish new plants. While many Nashville residents may be aware of the benefits of composting\, not every home has the space or means to conveniently compost. Nashville’s new Food Scraps Pickup Pilot program could be a solution to a few of these problems. \nJoin us to get the dirt on composting from Jenn Harrman\, Zero Waste Program Manager at Metro Nashville Waste Services. We will be discussing the Food Scraps Pickup Pilot and how this program fits into Nashville’s overall waste reduction goals. SUMMARY:Sustainable in the City Webinar - Nashville's Climate Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Derecho\, tornado\, flood\, heat wave\, and extreme cold. What do these things have in common? They are events that Nashville has experienced in the past four years that have had devastating impacts on the city. These types of weather events are occurring with greater severity and frequency due to a changing climate. Nashville has a plan in place to reduce carbon emissions\, but what is it doing to adapt to the extreme weather events that we are experiencing today? A changing climate can threaten access to basic resources\, disrupt people’s lives\, and cause damage to Nashville’s infrastructure. To protect our community\, Metro Nashville has created a Climate Adaptation and Resilience Plan\, while also working with intradepartmental Metro staff to develop an internal toolkit and framework\, which together aim to equitably improve Nashville’s ability to withstand and recover from climate-driven hazards. \nJoin us for an informative discussion with Kristin Stroup\, Executive Fellow\, Building Resilience in City Operations\, and Kendra Abkowitz\, Chief Sustainability and Resilience Officer for the Office of Mayor Freddie O’Connell. We will discuss the City’s draft plan and how it helps to ensure that Nashville’s infrastructure\, systems\, economy\, and community can anticipate\, cope with\, and bounce back from expected and unexpected events. She runs the Nashville Sustainability Roundtable\, the Sustainable Nashville Directory\, and B Tennessee. Off the clock\, you’ll find Bethany outside working in her garden\, digging through an estate sale\, reading\, and traveling as often as she can.

SUMMARY:Sustainable in the City Webinar - Youth-Led Community Design
DESCRIPTION:When we take action to protect the environment\, we are supporting the needs of Nashville’s future generations. With an eye towards the future\, it is also important that present-day city planning is a multi-generational effort that includes youth voices now. In order to be inclusive\, we need the voices of those impacted by planning decisions to be heard. The youth at Civic Design Center are advocating for a Nashville that meets the needs of their generation. \nJoin us for a conversation with Melody Gibson\, Education Director and Cydney Thompson\, Youth Programs Intern at Civic Design Center\, to learn more about the youth efforts in creating a sustainable and safer Nashville.
