Earth Day 2021: A Little Change Goes a Long Way

Wear a mask. Stay six feet apart. Commune outdoors as much as possible.

These are the three simple things global health experts say we should do to stop the worldwide pandemic that has wrecked and stalled our world for the last twelve months. At first, you would think restoring our Earth back to what it was before a global pandemic which has taken 3 million lives would be a monumental task. But in reality, a little goes a long way in preventing its spread and destruction.

We’re commemorating Earth Day this year by celebrating all those who take the extra step to restore our earth in the simplest ways.

Todd Lawrence, Executive Director

I’ve been thinking a lot about Earth Month’s theme this year – “restoring our earth” – and just how timely it is in the wake of COVID-19. Restoring our planet back to where it was before humanity’s giant footprint seems like an overwhelming effort. But like wearing a mask or staying six feet apart, helping reclaim what we’ve lost is about simple daily behaviors. It’s about turning off a light to save energy, planning meals better so we don’t waste food, and making better choices around how we travel, what we make, where we build, and whose voices are at the table when we’re thinking about solutions. Bottomline, it’s about thinking sustainably.

At Urban Green Lab, we’re commemorating Earth Day this year by celebrating all those who take the extra step to restore our earth in the simplest ways. You don’t have to wear a cape or crown to be a champion for our resources, for vulnerable communities, for a healthy economy and the welfare of future generations. If I’ve learned anything about my hometown in the past year it’s that Nashville is resilient and knows how to restore itself one brick at a time. That begins with caring and taking a first step.

Thank you for what you do and happy Earth Day from the Urban Green Lab team.
